We started out as pioneers and that spirit continues today. Our history goes back to the Sisters of Mercy in the 1850s and Catherine McAuley’s vision of one-to-one care.
This evolved into some of the best surgical and medical hospital services in the country throughout the twentieth century, including Sir Brian Barrett- Boyes’ renowned cardio-thoracic achievements in the 1960s.
By merging with Ascot Integrated Hospital in 2001, our organisation successfully challenged the public perception of the scope and potential of private medicine. Since then our journey towards better healthcare has been well established, focusing on providing world-class healthcare services and delivering a great experience for every patient, every time.
As a way to focus our diverse services and underline our ongoing investment into the future of healthcare, we have chosen a new brand name.
The meaning of this wording stems from the word ‘alleviate’, as the organisation aims to alleviate pain, discomfort and stress for all patients. This name is a simple, memorable descriptor for how our highly skilled staff, specialists, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities deliver an extraordinary level of care efficiently and effectively, with the patient’s needs at the core.
An optimistic, active word that is a fitting title for our journey to better healthcare.

We call this Ngā Rākau Turuturu – the covenant of the weaving pegs
-
We will listen to you
And your family/support carers
-
We will manaaki you
Uplift and carry your spirit, your soul when required
-
We will walk beside you
If you are struggling with anything, do not hesitate to ask anyone to help you
-
We will show our heartwood
You will experience the versions of our staff their loved ones experience at home

These principles woven together are the very fibres, the fabric your unique care plan will be held together by. Like any garment or korowai that is woven, your care plan requires two weaving pegs.
If you have any questions about Ngā Rākau Turuturu, please don’t hesitate to ask our friendly staff, who will be happy to explain what this human-centered nature of care means for you as our patient and for us as your carers.
