Undergoing prostate cancer tests can be a stressful experience for many patients. The Prostate Clinic offers a streamlined testing process, fast-tracking diagnostics and reducing unnecessary appointments, providing patients with essential support during this time.

Led by specialists from the Urology Institute at OneSixOne Medical Group, the clinic combines expert urologists with a multi-disciplinary team for comprehensive care. Patients referred to the clinic will be assigned a nurse specialist from their first appointment, who will be their main point of contact throughout their journey, including post-surgery support for up to six months.

Why choose The Prostate Clinic

  • Comprehensive and streamlined care

The Prostate Clinic will arrange rapid access to MRI, biopsy (if required), urologist and nurse specialist appointments, minimising the number of appointments and reducing waiting times.

  • Multidisciplinary team approach

A multidisciplinary team of urologists, radiologists, radiation and medical oncologists, physiotherapists, and nurse specialists will work together to ensure the best possible treatment option and support is provided.

  • Patient-centred

As part of the journey, we want patients to have an active role in decision making. They will have the option of having a consultation with different treatment providers and a nurse specialist to make an informed decision that is best for them.

The prostate journey step-by-step

1

Symptoms

The journey begins with a GP, when there is an identified risk for prostate cancer.

2

Referral

If the patient meets the eligibility criteria, the GP will refer them to The Prostate Clinic.

3

Further testing - MRI

Once consent is given, an MRI will be scheduled at Allevia Radiology or North MRI, prior to the urologist appointment.

A urologist will review the MRI results with the patient and determine if a biopsy is necessary for further testing.

5

Biopsy (if required)

The team may perform a biopsy to gather more information.

6

Discussing results

Your urologist will discuss the results with the patient and present potential treatment options if the results are positive.

7

Treatment

Specialists will support the patient in making an informed treatment decision that is best suited to their needs.

8

Post-treatment support

Eligible patients will receive nurse specialist and physiotherapy support for up to six months.

9

Monitoring

A urologist will continue to monitor the patient's health after treatment to check if the cancer is well managed and there are no new concerns.

FAQs

Some of our most frequently asked questions are provided for your convenience.  If you have a question we haven't answered, please contact us.

Am I eligible for The Prostate Clinic?

If you have any prostate concerns, we recommend discussing them with your GP or family doctor, and seeing if a referral to The Prostate Clinic is suitable.

I'm not a Southern Cross Health Insurance member but I'm interested in the services you provide. Can I still be referred to The Prostate Clinic?

Yes. The Prostate Clinic will support all patients regardless of your insurance provider. However, only Southern Cross Health Insurance members on eligible health insurance plans will have fully funded services through The Prostate Clinic. All other patients can refer to their existing insurance policy to understand their cover. See ‘Insurance and Payments’ section for further information.

Do I need pre-approval from my insurance provider before coming to the clinic?

The Prostate Clinic is fully-funded for Southern Cross Health Insurance members on eligible health insurance plans. See ‘Insurance and Payments’ section for further information.

Non-Southern Cross Health Insurance members should contact their insurer directly to confirm access to The Prostate Clinic. For a quote, they can reach The Prostate Clinic team on [email protected]

What is the cost per appointment if I am not insured with Southern Cross Health Insurance?

When patients are first contacted by The Prostate Clinic, the payment method and insurance provider will be confirmed, if relevant. At this stage, if the patient is with an insurance provider other than Southern Cross Health Insurance, a list of the fees associated with The Prostate Clinic will be provided. Patients can opt-out at any time.

What can I expect at The Prostate Clinic compared to other urology clinics?

The Prostate Clinic provides a fast-tracked comprehensive diagnostic service, reducing the need for multiple appointments. This enables patients to have fast access to MRI, biopsy, biopsy results, a treatment plan (if diagnosed), and our dedicated team of urologists and nurse specialist.

Our highly-experienced team of urologists from the Urology Institute at OneSixOne Medical Group provides a seamless team approach to managing patient care.

What is a biopsy?

A biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure performed by one of our urologists and involves taking tissue samples from the prostate gland to determine if prostate cancer is present. The biopsy is a day-stay procedure.

Local or general anaesthetic is injected to ensure the procedure is painless. During the procedure, a urologist inserts a needle through the skin between the scrotum and anus (the perineum) to reach the prostate, guided by ultrasound for precision. A sample of tissue is collected, and the needle is then withdrawn. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
